Upon the Earth, as withing the Skies
Spaces shift with us.
They mold our identities just as much as we mold the space around us and no matter where we go, through us, every space we’ve ever existed in is going to manifest itself.
Our homes share our human characteristics and because they are created by one another. That’s why space, for us, is a malleable entity. It’s so familiar that we can turn it into images, words, thoughts, stories, and emotions. In that sense, space, while being defined by its borders, is a liberating idea.
In times where our dearest spaces aren’t explicitly available to us, we can nurture them and revive them through our minds into the world of image and language. That way, the love we’ve had towards places we’ve lived in is still with us, like a loved one who’s passed away.
Space, while being primarily perceived physically, is no less important in our minds and it’s a mistake to think that a universe is bigger than a single word. The ability to be in a space defines its location, therefore the mind that exists in the space is the anchor of it. Otherwise, space is a mere image. The link is metaphysical, it manifests itself through trust, longing, and memory. Our identity manifests into space and vice versa, they’re, in a way, one entity.
The main character of this story, trapped in the yard, with all the doors closed and with nothingness all around, both mirrors the current events of isolation and also revives the aura of the space that we have lost. In the world detached from everything else, among the only known objects which are also unfamiliar, the character tries to make sense of what “things” mean.
After somewhat familiarizing himself with space, he discovers a change that occurs, revealing an image of another space. The rod that emerges with light, helps the character realize the nature of the world he lives in as he gains courage and a sense of wonder for discovery. He learns of somewhere else.
The “miniature” setting that he sees through the viewfinder is my childhood home with a wooden stove and burning fire. Through this journey, he realized that he, as an entity, is the power that binds the world together.
