Bird Nest
“Bird Nest“ is an illustration of a dynamic between old and new in my home. After hours of walking around Tbilisi, I was able to gather images of old doors, passages and windows which are in the state of decay.
Georgia is in a war with history. In the last 50 years alone, society has been warped multiple times. Starting with the protests against the Soviet Union, Georgia had a first taste of independence in 1991 after a whole century without freedom. Freedom, paradoxically, had a bitter taste; the capital got destroyed by the civil war for power. Alongside dictatorship and poverty,
Georgia lost part of its lands in yet another war and stepped into the 21st century with the Rose Revolution of 2003. The dismal consequences are constantly lurking in every corner for us.
Me and my generation stand and flourish above the ruins. but we are trapped inside of the brutal history. All of which has been seen by these antique doors. These passages have seen people walking out with candles, guns and flowers in their hands and crawling back with pain and blood.
Now, in these old doors, I imagine my friends and myself, trapped, unable to crawl out of history like a butterfly, unable to escape Venus Flytrap.
This is my home.
